The kitchen is the heart of any home. It’s where the kids grab a snack after school, it’s where you audition for ‘Bake Off’ by creating your own special recipe cup-cakes, and it’s where you sit with a friend and put the world to rights over a cup of coffee. But if it’s looking tired and shabby rather than sweet and chic, it can end up being the one place you don’t want to spend too much time in, rather than being a welcoming, warm and friendly space. So what do you do? Do you replace, renovate or tear the whole lot out and start from the ground up?

Finances

It’s going to depend, first and foremost, on how much money you can afford to spend or even want to spend on your kitchen. Not everyone has the spare cash to spend on a bespoke kitchen, but if money is no object then a complete rebuild is a potential solution. From the floor right up to a bespoke ceiling fan, including new white goods, worktops, cupboards, cabinets and drawers and those special little touches that make a kitchen so individual, a ‘blank cheque’ approach can certainly give you the kitchen of your dreams, but it will deplete your finances considerably!

A refurbishment is going to be a lot more affordable, as you keep your basic kitchen structure (the units and substructures) and replace the visual components such as cupboard and cabinet doors, drawer fronts, fixtures and fittings, and worktops. This keeps the costs down but the visual impact – that ‘wow’ factor – on target.

Time

Another factor to consider is how long you can be without your kitchen. A complete rebuild from floor to ceiling is going to take time as well as money, putting your kitchen out of action (and out of bounds!) for weeks at a time.Refurbishments take a fraction of the time and can be completed in days, rather than weeks.

A bespoke look

Refurbishing doesn’t mean heading out to your local DIY store and buying ‘off the shelf’ kitchen cabinet doors and drawer fronts. A few pounds more will give you bespoke, tailor-made doors that fit your kitchen units to the millimetre, so they hang properly and look perfect – even if you have one or two ‘awkward’ cupboards that are not a generic size or shape.

A choice of styles

Kitchen refurbishment experts now offer a huge range of styles, from classical to contemporary, traditional farmhouse to ultra-sleek minimalist. When you’re choosing your new doors and drawer fronts, it’s then crucial to consider how the décor will fit in with the rest of your house.

At the opposite end of the spectrum to a complete replacement is a budget refurbishment. If your budget is severely limited then spend your money on a couple of tins of paint, some new fixtures and fittings, and little touches that give your kitchen a lift. From stencilling on plain, existing tiles to create a completely new look to simply replacing tired-looking hinges, door handles and drawer pulls, you can transform the look of your existing kitchen in an afternoon!
